Description
Summary:The papers consist of extensive client project files and documentation (sketches, mechanicals, models, printed samples, package designs, photographs, and posters), business and professional correspondence, financial records, publications, and personal papers. Among Beall's specialties were corporate identity campaigns and style manuals, and he created logos and trademarks for prominent American companies including Caterpillar Tractor, International Paper, Martin Marietta, Merrill Lynch, and Rohm and Haas, as well as pharmaceutical advertising and periodicals for the Upjohn Company. Some of his most notable designs were a series of posters designed in the 1930s for the United States government's Rural Electrification Administration. A long-time member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Art Directors Club of New York, and the Society of Typographic Arts, Beall compiled scrapbooks and portfolios of his work and the publicity it garnered; his designs and projects were exhibited to acclaim throughout his career, and his homes and studios in New York and Connecticut were photographed by Philippe Halsman, André Kertész, and Arnold Newman, among others.
